Home Town: Rabanastre, Capital of Dalmasca

Canon History: After losing both his parents to the plague at an early age and elder brother, Reks, to the war savaging Dalmasca, Vaan embraced fellow orphans on the streets of Rabanastre. Acquiring the nickname “Vaan Ratsbane” for killing rats in the sewers, Vaan quickly fell into the role of “big brother” for the younger children, all the while being himself, a giant child at times. Meanwhile, taking residence with his childhood friend Penelo and her family, the two worked odd jobs to support the group of street kids.  While being forced into a reluctant leadership of them, Vaan easily developed a resentment of the empire for the loss of his family and the mistreatment of his people. He quickly became known in Rabanastre as a petty thief whose aspirations to become a sky pirate only lead him into trouble.

At the start of Final Fantasy XII, amidst his attempt to infiltrate the capital’s castle, a series of attacks by both the empire and rebellion on the same night launch much of what becomes the main storyline of Final Fantasy XII. Meeting  partners in crime and sky piracy, Balthier and Fran, Vaan accompanies the two in order to escape the battlefield of the capital via the sewers, whereupon they later meet a leader of the rebellion and the formerly assumed deceased, Princess Ashe. Ultimately leading to their journey to overcome the empire and reinstate her political rein, the party continues onward, to find numerous allies along the way.

Personality:  His harbored resentment for the empire and the war serves as a main motivation for his actions prior to XII, and he often acts without second thought. His lack of awareness and naivety can also lead him into various troubles with the local guards. Welcoming to change and overly eager to aid his companions, Vaan can use adventure as a source of escape from his troubles as well as a rush.

Appearance: Vaan has ash-blond hair, grey-blue eyes, and a slight tan, likely from spending too much time in the desert sun. He stands at 5’ 7” (170 cm) and has a young face that gets him instantly turned down by any local barkeep. Dress-wise, he wears an open metal vest that used to be his brother’s as well as armored gauntlets and knee-high boots.

Time Frame: For the most part, I place Vaan at the beginning state of Revenant Wings, wherein he still has The Galbana and the events of XII have passed. I am more than willing to be flexible on this though.
