“No.“ The answer was relatively blunt and to the point, but honest nonetheless. While chocobo breeding was a subject that, in science, was relatively predictable, the actual outcomes depended on feeding and environment. Suzaku, while it was native for chocobos in general, as wild ones roamed the fields and plains in great numbers, predominantly was home to the yellow and gold variety, and little else. Chirifuda was a strange anomaly.
Though he had little clue where the bird was actually from. The egg appeared on his dorm step, after all. “Suzaku is home to yellow and gold. Certain breeders can achieve the various colorings, but purple is a mystery to us still.”
The dealer spoke like a true scholar on the topic. It fit that Ace would have some rare form of chocobo after all.“So, it was luck of the draw? I suppose you would probably know best how to care for the guy.”
If strands such as purple could be discovered, Vaan couldn’t help but wonder what types existed in the world beyond that. Should he encounter any strange occurrences, he would make note that Ace would be best to speak with on the subject.“I didn’t know there was such dedication to breeding colors like that though.”
I picked a good home. Ace thought idly to himself as he watched the male’s chin duck down and mouth move towards the little fledgling. Blue gaze pondered a few other unnecessary details, such as if Vaan could take care of the small guy, but he figured that he’d make do. Most people that cared enough tended to. “Yes. Chirifuda ‘s a purple one, actually…”
However, the continued prodding set a reluctant look upon his face. A twinged smile that resulted in an awkward ha leaving his mouth. As much as he was certain Vaan wouldn’t tell anybody or, at least, would not be believed, the fact of the matter remained that he did not wish to impart such knowledge along. “Nope. Won’t be a secret if I tell people.”
Forfeiting his attempts to uncover their location, Vaan instead pursued another point of interest,“A purple chocobo?”
Vaan had seen various colors before, sure, red, black, but never purple. “Are those native to Suzaku?”
He inquired upon the thought that the enthusiast seemed quite knowledgeable about chocobos. Though, Vaan got the impression that Ace was merely knowledgeable about many things from his general composure. Furthermore, the glow in his eyes as he had spoken so fondly of them easily revealed his interest. Other than general riding concepts and the birds’ admiration of gysahl greens, Vaan had never been too familiar with them himself. “I don’t actually know much about their breeding.”
It probably was hardly ever a problem for a boy that was so interested in airship mechanics, but a brief nod was given. Really, in hindsight, he should’ve eaten more before he boarded, but there was no way to change it now. “Yeah. Turbulence made my insides a knot.”
Air turbulence? Vaan had figured that the other would be more used to air travel for whatever military work he had performed in the past.
“Really? In the future, I heard that eskir berries can help with that."

Questions and inevitable inquiries, Ace knew. A slow breath left his mouth as he pondered the best way to answer such a question. Really, the chocobo chicks were not his to distribute, but he too often took it upon himself to take in the amounts left behind by mothers forced into battle and soon vanquished. After seeing the stables clear out so quickly so often, he simply decided he no longer wanted to watch the birds get bred as tools for war.
“I have one. Bigger than that one, but it isn’t an adult yet, either.“ He beamed, a rare occasion on its own. ”As for where I got them, that’s a secret. Can’t get in trouble, after all.”
“Too much… hate in this world.”
Vaan held a slight disbelief at the concept of Ace “getting into trouble” for anything. However, the dealer’s last comment had nearly passed Vaan’s ears. Hate? Had the chocobos sourced from questionable origins, they were likely some liberation tactic or something, given that Ace so seemingly conveyed his loyalty in warning Vaan not to betray his military forces in the past. “Another young chocobo,” Vaan thought aloud about Ace’s pet. Then, sunnily directed toward the chick, Vaan stated, “That means you can a friend of your own kind to visit sometimes.”
Returning back to the human side of conversation, he looked to the other, “Don’t worry Ace, wherever you get them from, I won’t tell your secret.”
… like Vaan would want to saunter over to any local authorities anyways.
Only the most unimpressed of stares was given. “…Yes, Vaan. I was fighting an airship…“ Sarcasm was a beautiful thing.
Vaan could sense the slight sarcasm in Ace’s tone. Despite his mild misgivings on the reality of the dealer actually fighting airships, Vaan remained confused by his prior statements,"Airship problems then?”
“Do you know what the heart of [m a g i c] is? The answer is lies. Do you know what the most frightening lie is? The one that deceives itself.”

Galuf was certainly a unique name, Ace thought to himself as his gaze trailed to the little bird in the boy’s hands. It didn’t exactly speak strength to him, but it certainly seemed like a name for a large appearance. Luckily, chocobos were well gifted when it came to being tall, so the name did fit.
“I think its fine. Not too long. He’ll learn it easier.“ His observations were brief, as his thoughts had mostly turned to noting just how tame their small friend was. To sit in one place for so long, and so quietly, was unusually uncharacteristic, but nothing Ace thought to worry over.
“He’ll prove to be a good balance to you.”
Balance? Vaan supposed there could be benefits to having such a partnership. In fact, should Ace be such an enthusiast, he figured that the dealer likely had one of his own. Maybe for travel, or perhaps, he even had an armored one to fight alongside, granted Vaan’s new discovery of his military work. At the least, he had one as a pet right?
“So Ace, uh, do have many of them? Chocobos, that is? I mean, where did you get it?”
It had not been the most eloquent way of phrasing his questions, but Vaan supposed he had gotten them across.
